| The westernmost bridge is Qingren Suspension
Bridge 情人吊橋. It's to the west of Liming Elementary
School and hidden behind a row of buildings, so it often goes unnoticed and isn't really
much visited by tourists. It was built in 1968 and has been repaired a number of times due
to typhoon damage. These days it's been superseded by a nearby concrete bridge, but at
least for the time being the suspension bridge is still functional for predestrians and
the occasional motorbike. Far more famous is Dijiu Suspension Bridge 地久吊橋 which parallels Highway 18. Walking from west to east, as soon as you cross the bridge you should be able to see Longyin Temple 龍隱寺 -- if you're traveling during typhoon season, perhaps you'll want to make use of it to pray for a safe journey. Just beyond the temple, you climb some steep steps to find Tianchang Suspension Bridge 天長吊橋 which offers the best views of all. These two bridges are often collectively referred to as the Tianchang-Dijiu Suspension Bridges 天長地久吊橋. These has a particularly romantic meaning in Chinese, as Tianchang-Dijiu (literally "heaven long-earth long") is a Chinese idiom that roughly translates as "eternal love." Not surprisingly, the romantic name (coupled with the good scenery) has made this a popular spot for young lovers who come here and swear that their love will last as long as heaven and earth. If you visit, you may well see some Chiayi couples dressed up in marriage garb and posing for wedding photos. authorship :Alishan National Sceareanic Area |
