古蹟之創建年代及歷史沿革：
　　吳鳳，福建省，平和縣人，清康熙年間，隨親移居諸羅，性行厚毅，勤讀書明義理年廿四歲任理番通事。時山胞有出草殺人馘首為祭惡習，吳鳳立志化解其習，經教化撫慰，不殺人已四十餘年，惟鄰社惡習未改，又值歲荒，山胞歸咎未取人頭祭神之故，堅欲恢復舊習，吳鳳阻止無效，恐濫殺無辜，決心自我犧牲，乃約曰如某日有穿朱衣紅巾者經此，可殺以祭神，山胞如約伏伺，果有朱衣紅巾者至，立時箭矛齊施，趨割其首，始知為吳鳳公也，山胞悲痛欲絕，埋石發誓，永不殺人，惡習遂除，後人嘉其義，立祠以祀，名曰吳鳳廟。廟門上題曰：「阿里山忠王祠」。先總統　蔣公蒞廟巡視親題：「舍生取義」匾一方以褒其仁。廟西里許乃成仁之地也。

古蹟之現狀：
　　廟，前後殿及左右廂房。並四週圍磚造圍牆。磚造、平房、古式建築。廟前紅色大拱門。現增建後殿，及紀念園、成仁地、以供後人憑吊遊覽。

規劃情形：
　　中埔鄉吳鳳風景特定區。（列為公乙）隔鄰設有吳鳳紀念園。廟西里許乃成仁地。

Historical Background:
Wu Feng, who hailed from Fujien Province, was a native of Ping He County. During the reign of Kang Xi, Qing Dynasty, he migrated with his family. He was diligent and firm. At the age of 24, he was appointed to manage the affairs of Pan.
During those times, the aborigines had a bad habit of killing people and offering them as sacrifices. Wu Feng was determined to resolve their bad habit and tried to convince them to stop the killing for forty years. However, the aborigines found it hard to amend their
habits and started their killing. Wu Feng could not stop them. For fear that the random killing of the aborigines would harm the innocent, he decided to sacrifice himself and thus, announced to the aborigines that at a certain time, they will see a man in red clothing and red scarf and could kill this man as a sacrifice to their god. The aborigines conceded and at the appointed time, they waited and did see the man that Wu Feng had spoken about. They immediately shot aimed their arrow at the man and prepared to cut off his head. Upon seeing that the man they killed was Wu Feng, the aborigines were heart-stricken and sworn right there and then that they would not kill anymore people and to stop their evil practice. The people in the area were so happy and decided to build an ancestral temple and named it Wu Feng Temple. Atop the temple door is an inscription that reads "Alishan Loyal Ruler Shrine". When the late President Chiang toured the temple, he presented a tablet to show his benevolence. The east side of the temple is dedicated to those who died for righteous cause.
